Success in Chiquipata Baja

A productive aquifer found at 47 meters provides residents with a constant source of potable water.

Men inspecting pump Chiquipata residents were ecstatic when the drill rig encountered a high-yield, artesian aquifer at 47 meters below the ground surface. Due to the pressure of the aquifer, a pump is not needed to bring the water to the surface. Water is now being collected in the existing holding tank, allowing people to cook and drink with safe, plentiful water.

Men inspecting pump Prior to the new well, Chiquipata Baja residents obtained drinking water from shallow, unreliable and often contaminated water well. For over five years, residents lowered buckets down the old, dilapidated well to obtain drinking water; in times of drought, the well was often dry.

Men inspecting pumpThanks to Borella Geology Inc., who provided the majority of funding, the Tooker Family, the Barry Family, Casola Well Drilling, and the House Family, the community will now have a constant source for clean water. And since the well taps a deep, productive aquifer, the water supply will be immune to the temporal droughts that have in the past ruined crops, killed livestock, and seriously stressed the lives of many impoverished people.
